I found that the original version of Great Giana Sisters had been released on DOS (not just C64). From this came a HUGE AMOUNT of info on the game. Now there's several versions of the game as I found out including for modern consoles and computers (as well as disk images for the original Commodore version of the game)! This whole thing about Mario rippoff and Nintendo suing stuff that I had read on Wiki peaked my interest, and I googled the title of the game. Thus the game when the way of the dinosaurs. In fact the Wiki entry for "look and feel" where it mentioned this, pointed out that Nintendo sued over this. Just recently I looked it up in Wikipedia and one example given of infringing on the "look and feel" copyright was Great Giana Sisters when compared to Super Mario Brothers. I found this game originally while looking up "look and feel" which is a term in copyright law I'd remember reading originally on some software's license agreement once. So the game's title Great Giana Sisters is obviously a spoof on the title Super Mario Brothers.Ĭ64, Amiga, and all other ports have box art that is identical for the German version except for the phrase that says what system it's for, and I don't believe there was an English version for any system other than the Commodore 64. Great = Super and Sisters are just female siblings where Brothers are males siblings. It could have been achieved with a level editor and a sprite editor for that NES game, it was so similar. It basically was a blatant knockoff of Super Mario Bros 1.
This obscure game started on the on the Commodre 64 (also available on Amstrad CPC, Amiga, Atari ST, and DOS), under the name The Great Giana Sisters.
